We are changing our room, within the bounds of a 15 x 20 ft. space, to show more about our location in the world. Our sign, only a painted bulletin board background, has our school name, town, & state. Underneath it is a small table with items from our county. Things that might be recognized by others, such as Krispy Kreme donuts, and items from Old Salem. Winston-Salem, about 2 miles from Rural Hall, is the home of krispy Kreme. It also was the original home of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, but there are no cigarettes on the table. Old Salem is a restored community from the 1700's when Moravians moved from Pennsylvania to Wachovia, to settle. This tourist area is still used today, with Salem Academy and Salem College there, along with many of the homes where people actually live. Some of the buildings are for tourists to learn about the past and offer great field trips for students.
For the state, we have a NC flag, and bulletin board of areas around the state. There is information, maps, and photos of the outer banks (the barrier islands that are very popular summer destinations & loaded with historical significance--the "Lost Colony" and Blackbeard), lighthouses, mountains, and other locations around the state.
We had a partner for three years in the mountains that videoconferenced with us every two weeks (fourth grades that study our state for social studies). The mountain teacher retired and now we are beginning a rotation with teachers in Franklin County, the coastal plains region.
Our national and international connections could also share information easier with a well planned and "set-up" room. Our new building is under way and we will have a completely separate room for videoconferencing in a year or so. This upgrade will allow for more videoconferencing and a separate computer lab, which we currently have to close when we conference because we are in the small end of that room. This was actually the original library for the 1-12 grades of Rural Hall School in the early 1900's.
As for technical set-up, we have a new Tandberg Edge95 (as of November 2008) and will be able to host our own conferences if we choose in the future. We are outside the firewall and only turn on and plug in our equipment when we are scheduled for a conference. We look forward to new conferences and experiences for our students.
If you have suggestions for set-up or have experiences to share, please reply or post. Thanks!
